Lenchois Maranhenses is an extensive dune area in northern Brazil. It is located on the coast of Maranhão state. The fixed and shifting dunes extend up to 40 km inland, creating Brazil's only desert despite the relatively high rainfall. During the rainy season, the depressions fill with water, which evaporates again in the dry season. The different dune formations appear surreal.
