Family photo-album

In this project I explore my neighbourhood’s memories through a temporary collection of over 2400 objects I found on sidewalks in Brussels. Discarded by their original owners, objects are forgotten until a bystander takes them to their new life. I use them to explore the possibility of creating a new meaning from these dilapidated and sometimes unpleasantly appearing witnesses of history. The exciting and unpredictable content of installations made of found objects in the collection, led to recreation of an imaginary family photo-album. At the end, the album was not only meant to reconstruct the family, but also to define the individuals’ identities in a broader context of the city, through the language of recycled objects and appropriated memories. The result is a combination of what previous owners, and I have built through a sequence of time-space disentanglements – unique ambivalences between memory and history, fiction and reality.

Author
Miloje Savić (b. 1977, Belgrade, Serbia) is a lens-based artist working across photography, collage, and mixed-media installation. With a background in life sciences and a Master’s degree in Arts, Photography and Design from ELISAVA’s SHIFTA School for Digital Creators (Barcelona, 2021–2022), Savić brings a multidisciplinary lens to his practice.
Rooted in both documentary and fine art traditions, his work engages deeply with pressing social and political issues – from environmental degradation and waste management to the appropriation and recontextualization of personal and collective memory. His distinctive visual language blends portraiture and still life with textured collage and conceptual installation to construct thought-provoking narratives around identity, transformation, and sustainability.
